Inscription.
The north side of the nave was rebuilt in Gothic style in the early 13th century. Pointed arches were supported on typically diamond-shaped bases. The piece of stone on display represents the Gothic architecture of much of the cathedral and monastery. Relatively little carved stone was found in the nave during the 1999-2000 excavations mainly due to losses caused by the use of the area as a burial ground from c1770 to c1860.
The Conroy family vault that features in the Meet the Ancestors programme was found between this pier and the next pier beyond the bridge. Some gravestones have been preserved at the top of the bank.
