1. 6 inch Gun Marker
Inscription.
Original 6 inch Mk 24
Calibre 152mm (6 inch)
Range 23km (25,400 yards)
Rate of Fire 6 to 8 rounds per minute
Shell weight 50kg (112lb)

A 6 inch Mk 24 was mounted here and, with its powered turret, would have been about a third larger than the gun you see.

The 6 inch gun was a dual purpose Coast Defence / Anti Aircraft gun and was mounted at Heugh Gun Battery in 1941. In order to do this the original emplacement was removed or incorporated into this new much larger position (the original 1900 holdfast bolts can still be seen on the emplacement floor). A blast wall and crew shelter (now demolished) was also added and the whole was camouflaged with paint and nets.

By this time the rangefinders, observation posts and plotting room which controlled the gun were all outside the battery perimeter. They were supplemented by a radar feed from Kinley Hill. This gun remained in service until 1956 as did the Lighthouse Battery gun which was upgraded at the same time. 54.697499, -1.176749
