Inscription.  

Sur L'île aux Basques, on voit encore les vestiges de fourneaux construits par les Basques. Le Père Nouvel et ses néophytes papinachois se retirèrent sur l'île aux Basques, en 1666, pour se protéger contre les Iroquois.

At Ile-aux-Basques, there can still be seen the remains of furnaces built by the Basques. In 1666, to save their lives from the Iroquois, Father Nouvel and his Papinachois Indian converts took refuge on this island.

Location. 48° 7.505′ N, 69° 10.471′ W. Marker is in Trois-Pistoles, Quebec, in Les Basques MRC. Marker is on rue Jean-Rioux just south of rue Notre-Dame, on the left when traveling south. Touch for map. Marker is near the entrance to l'église Notre-Dame-des-Neiges/Our Lady of Snows Church. Marker is at or near this postal address: 30 rue Notre-Dame Est, Trois-Pistoles, Quebec G0L 4K0, Canada.
