Inscription. Many versions of the Iroquois Creation Story exist.

It is set in a time when there existed two distinct worlds. Sky World was inhabited by spirit beings not unlike humans. At its center was a great tree whose fruits and flowers radiated blue light. Beneath this world, and unknown to it, was a boundless black sea populated by water creatures similar to those found on earth.

The story tells of the birth and life of Sky Woman who married Hodangeih, caretaker of the Sky World Tree. Upon learning of his wife's pregnancy, Hodangeih uprooted the tree. The woman slipped into the hole as she peered at the world beneath. As she fell, water fowl rose from the Great Black Sea to cushion her in midair and lower her safely to the back of the Great Turtle. Muskrat dove to the sea bottom for a pawful of earth. Placed on the back of Turtle, that earth grew and grew until it became Great Turtle Island, upon which we stand today.
