1. Civil War Fort Duffield Marker
Before you are the remains of Kentucky’s oldest and best preserved earthen fortification. The earthen walls were designed to stop cannon balls unlike wooden stockade fortifications of earlier periods. This original 1,000 foot long earthen wall was approximately 17 feet from the bottom of the ditch to the top of the wall. The top of the wall was approximately 9 feet wide. Time has eroded the walls to today’s present height and thickness.

Although eroded by time, the fort's walls height and width remain impressive. During the War, the distance from the top of the wall to the bottom of the ditch was 17 feet and the top of the wall was 9 feet wide.
