fabricae vel officinae
These buildings, flanking a major roadway through the village (vicus), were 3rd century industrial workshops. Excavated in 2004, they appear to have been used in the initial stages of iron production. A number of clay-lined hearths were identified, which environmental samples showed had been heather fuelled. A large quantity of naturally formed iron bog-ore was also recovered from the floor of each building It appears that the iron ore was being roasted in the hearths to rid it of impurities.
