Triggs Brigade - Preston’s Division
2 Napoleons, 2 24 PDR. Howitzers.
Leyden’s Artillery Battalion, Preston’s Division, Buckner’s Corps.
September 19, 1863.
Capt. Tyler M. Peeples, Commanding.
1st Lieut. William J. Born.
1st Lieut. Thomas H. Loveless (Wounded).
2d Lieut. John T. Clower.
The battery operated with Trigg’s brigade during the battle. It came into position on this ground about 4 P.M., as the brigade advanced, and was subjected to a very severe enfilading fire of artillery is well as a fire from artillery and infantry in its front. Owing to the unfavorable position of the battery, the cannoneers could not see the enemy’s artillery. The fire of the battery was so directed as not to injure the infantry in front. When the brigade retired from the front of the battery it was dark and the action ceased. The battery was not engaged on the 20th, though subjected to the fire of the enemy’s battery. Casualties of the battle: 1 officer and 2 men wounded; 11 horses killed and disabled.
Erected 1890 by War Department. (Marker Number MT-1264.)
