The North Gate
The north gate (porta principalis sinistra) is the only one of the original four which opened onto land beyond the Wall. However, the approach from the north was steep and the gate was eventually reduced to a minor entrance.

Like the other three gates, the north gate had two arched passages flanked by towers with guard rooms. The east passage was never used but archaeological excavations have revealed a ramp and a road surface on the steep slope outside, and deep cart ruts inside. This showed that the western passage was used, but by the end of the second century AD it is likely that only foot traffic passed through. From that time, most movement took place through the Wall at the Knag Burn Gate, in the valley east of the fort.
