Woodbridge in Middlesex County, New Jersey — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Bloomfield House c. 1750
Built c. 1750, this was the home of Dr. Moses Bloomfield (1729-91), noted surgeon and physician in Washington’s Continental Army during the Revolutionary war. Dr. Bloomfield, a Woodbridge native, was a Middlesex County delegate to the Convention of New Jersey that adopted the state’s first Constitution in 1776. He is interred in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Originally located on Freeman Street, the home was moved in later years to its present location at 115-117 Harrell Avenue. The house suffered damage during the Revolution, and the family vacated until hostilities ceased. On July 4, 1783, Dr. Bloomfield held the first anti-slavery meeting in Middlesex County and freed his slaves in a public declaration. The house is believed to be among several Woodbridge stops on the famed Underground Railroad.
Moses’ son, Joseph Bloomfield (1753-1823), was born in the house. Joseph served during the American Revolution and later became New Jersey Attorney General. He was Governor of New Jersey from 1801-02 and 1803-1812 and a member of the U.S. House or Representatives from 1817-21. The town of Bloomfield, New Jersey was named in his honor.
