Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Madre Santísima de la Luz.
A diferencia de otras ciudades, la Catedral leonesa no está en la plaza principal. Esto se debe a que el recinto no se concibió originalmente como tal y en ese tiempo, León tampoco era sede de una Diócesis. Los jesuitas comenzaron a construir el edificio en 1764, pero a consecuencia de su destierro el proyecto quedó inconcluso, retomándola el clero secular con el apoyo de los notables de la ciudad hasta 1830.

La ahora Catedral Basílica Metropolitana alberga la imagen de la Madre Santísima de la Luz. Pintada en Palermo (Italia), la imagen sería enviada a alguna nueva comunidad jesuita en el mundo. Tres veces se sorteó y las mismas veces salió León, a donde la imagen llegó en 1732; desde 1864 es también patrona de la Diócesis.

Aunque como Catedral fue consagrada en marzo de 1866 (una vez constituido el Obispado leonés), la obra como tal se concluyó hasta comienzos del siglo XX. A estos cambios de época se debe la mezcla de estilos. Por ejemplo, su fachada de cantera y el interior son de corte neoclásico - destaca el altar principal de mármol -, pero

la puerta lateral poniente es barroca. A su vez, la capilla de Cristo Rey es art decó y la de San José es de un peculiar estilo neo-mudéjar.

Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Madre Santísima de la Luz.
Julio 1731

Se establece la Compañía de Jesús en León gracias al patrocinio que ordenara en su testamento el rico hacendado Don Cristóbal de Aguilar.

Con los recursos asignados, los religiosos construyeron un sencillo templo (en la esquina de las actuales calles de 20 de Enero y Álvaro Obregón) y contiguo a este, la primera escuela de la localidad. Los jesuitas trajeron también la imagen de la Madre Santísima de la Luz, la cual habría de convertirse en la patrona espiritual de la comunidad y símbolo de la naciente identidad leonesa.

Producto de este fervor fue la decisión de levantar un nuevo templo apenas a una cuadra del primero, conocido a partir de entonces como la “Compañía vieja”. Las obras de la “Compañía nueva” comenzaron en 1760, pero no llegó a concluirse como tal al ser expulsados las jesuitas de la Nueva España por órdenes del rey Carlos III. En ese momento apenas tenían los muros de la nave principal.

La construcción de la “Compañía nueva” se retomó cuando México ya era un país independiente y, cosas de la vida, el templo alcanzaría un esplendor insospechado: hoy es la Catedral de León

Unlike other cities, the Cathedral of Leon is not in the main square. This is because the church was not originally conceived as such. The Jesuits began to build it in 1764, but due to their exile the project remained unfinished.

Although the temple was consecrated as Cathedral in March 1866,
