Exterior Clues to Identify a Town Log House
Mifflinburg has many log-constructed houses. Most are buried in renovations and extensions, clad with wood or even vinyl siding. Only a discerning eye can perhaps recognize these original log structures. Some of the distinguishing features are:
Window Pane Configuration
Glass panes were standard sizes in the early 19th century
· Downstairs front windows were 9 over 6 panes (lites)
· Upstairs windows were 6 over 6 panes (lites) 8" x 10"
Wide Depth of Window Sills & Thresholds
Thickness of hewn logs would determine the depth of sills ranging from approx. 8 to 10".
Pitch of Roof
An experienced eye can identify a certain pitch ---not too steep, but not extremely wide.
Standard pitch would be: 8" of rise for every 12" run.
Location of windows and doors
Two models dominate Mifflinburg, the larger one being an extension of the smaller one.
