Steedman Headquarters
"Colonel Steedman having been put in command of the left wing, composed of the First Alabama, 15th Arkansas and 10th Arkansas, a detachment of Wingfield's battalion and 39th Mississippi regiment. Colonel Steedman, during the siege, won the highest encomiums from his men and superiors, and would have received a brigadier-general's commission soon afterwards had he not been captured and sent to prison."

1st Alabama Infantry Regiment
Colonel Isaiah George Washington Steedman was the commander of the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment. Just before the siege General Gardner, the overall Confederate commander, made Steednan responsible for the northern defensive perimeter. Steedman used a house owned by the John Rist family, which was located just behind the Commissary Hill battery, as his headquarters.
