Requirements of the Job
Being a lighthouse keeper was hard work. When a storm raged against the coast, the lighthouse keeper often had to stay awake for several days in a row. They had many varied daily tasks. Regardless of the weather, they had to:
· Light the beacon and keep it alight. In foggy, rainy weather, they simply light the beacon early
· Wind-up the weighing system that controlled the beacon's rotation every six or seven hours
· Clean the parabolic reflectors and the glass prism
· Replace and clean the glass on the lantern
· Polish the brasses
· Keep a log of the movement of ships and the weather
· Operate the telegraph
· Prepare the fuel needed for the beacon
