1. Calvin T.S. Brent Residence Marker
Inscription. Calvin T.S. Brent (1854-1899), believed to be Washington's first African American architect, lived here briefly in the early 1890s. (His other residences have been demolished.) Brent began practicing in 1875 and after a two-year apprenticeship and is credited with more than 100 projects as architect or architect/builder in all four quadrants of the city. These include Fourth Baptist (later Metropolitan Baptist) Church, 1225 R Street (demolished); Mount Jezreel Baptist Church, 501 E Street, SE; Third Baptist Church, 1546 Fifth Street, NW; Mount Zion Baptist parsonage, 2902 O Street, NW; and houses at 1737 S and 1704 V Streets, NW.
