1. James H. Hawes House Marker
Inscription. In the late 1800’s James H. Hawes built this magnificent Queen Anne home displaying twin gables and very elaborate spindled porches, including a porte-cochere. Born in London, England, James came to this country with his father, a toy manufacturer. The elder Hawes began manufacturing toys in New York City, but later went to Newark, NJ where his son James became a business partner. In 1861 James came with his family to Monroeton where he started a small toy factory with his brother George. The business started with ten employees and increased to nearly two hundred. In 1881 James purchased his brother’s interest in the business and later moved the industry to Towanda, just north of the Historic District in a neighborhood still called Toytown.
