Inscription.
In 1914, Samuel Chiles Mitchell was elected the 16th President of what was then known as Delaware College, now the University of Delaware.

During his six-year tenure as President, the Women's College was opened; the central campus was planned; the endowment fund was enlarged; Old College was restored; new buildings were erected, including Wolf and Harter Halls; and the construction of Memorial Hall to honor Delawareans who died in World War I was proposed.

Popular with students, President Mitchell also raised entrance requirements, strengthened the academic program and brought greater national visibility to Delaware College.

The 650-seat Mitchell Hall was opened in 1930, a gift of major benefactor and alumnus H. Rodney Sharp.

Erected by University of Delaware.
