On this hill stood the Jewish town of Yodfat (Jotapata), which was probably first settled in the 3rd century BCE, and was conquered by the Hasmoneans in the 2nd century BCE. The town, covering an area of about 4.7 hectares, grew from the northern hilltop to the southern slopes. Before the Great Revolt it had about 1,500 residents, who sustained themselves on agriculture and crafts. In 66 CE Yodfat was one of 19 Galilean communities fortified by Josephus Flavius, and probably served as his command post in the western sector. Here in 67 CE the first battle of the Great Revolt was waged in between the Jewish rebels, under his command, and a Roman army, numbering some 60,000 troops, under The command of Vespasian and his son Titus. Excavations were carried out here by the University of Rochester of New York and the Israel Antiquities Authority, from 1992 to 2000.
