Inscription. Daniel Turner (1794-1850) was born in Staten Island, New York. Appointed a midshipman in the US Navy in 1808, he quickly rose through the ranks, being appointed a lieutenant in 1813 and assigned to command of the Niagara. Relinquishing command to Captain Elliott, he took command of the brig Caledonia during the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813; His ship played an important part in the battle, at one point her two 24-pounder long guns were the only ones in the fleet capable of returning fire on the British ships battering the Lawrence. Serving with Commodore Perry on two other occasions, Turner was by his side when Perry died of yellow fever in 1819.
