Here lived Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen, born December 2, 1833 in Guetersloh (Westphalia), died August 26, 1910 in Strasbourg. Professor at the Julius-Maximilians University Wuerzburg, 1865-1872. Chair for Pathological Anatomy and History of Medicine. Discoverer of the mobility and phagoztotic-potential of white blood cells, and therefore a pioneer of modern theory on inflammation; researcher of the disease named after him, "von Recklinghausen disease (of the bones)" (not to be confused with neurofibromatosis, a different disease also sometimes carrying his name).
