Inscription. The William H. Coleman Hospital for Women built in 1927, was the first hospital in Indiana built specifically for gynecology and obstetrics. Architect Robert Frost Daggett designed the building, which was funded by William H. and Sallie E. Coleman in memory of their daughter who died from a complication related to her only pregnancy. Both nursing and medical students received their maternity training in the hospital beginning in 1928. Over 100,000 babies were born in the hospital prior to the transfer of the services to University Hospital in 1974. The university renovated the building in 1981 to accommodate the School of Allied Health, and changed the name to Coleman Hall.
