Date of Issue: September 7, 1897

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry I. Smith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 15 March 1865, while serving with Company B, 7th Iowa Infantry, in action at Black River, North Carolina. First Lieutenant Smith voluntarily and under fire rescued a comrade from death by drowning.
