1. 140 Years Of Help And Hope Marker
Inscription. Established in 1879 by Reverend and Mrs. A.G. Ruliffson, the Bowery Mission was located at 14, 36, 55 and 105 Bowery before moving to 227 Bowery in 1909, an event heralded by a visit and speech by President Taft.

For nearly 140 years, it has provided food, shelter, clothing, job opportunities, medical assistance and rehabilitation for millions of men. It has run a summer camp for inner city kids since 1894, and homes for women since 1990.

Built in 1876 by coffin manufacturer/undertaker Jonas Stolts, 227 Bowery was designed by William Jose. The Chapel’s Tudor-Revival style façade was designed by Marshall and Henry Emery to resemble a welcoming English Inn (sic), with the Prodigal Son story depicted in stained-glass windows designed by Tiffany protégé Benjamin Sellers. It became a NYC Landmark in 2012.

The Mission expanded into the circa 1830 Federal-style townhouse at 229 Bowery in 1980. From 1879 to 1893, it was the studio of photographer Charles Eisenmann, for his portraits of exotic sideshow performers.
