1. Cardinal Red Marker
Inscription. On Opening Day, the players had new uniforms that featured red trim for the first time. Willie McHale, a writer for the St. Louis Republic overheard a lady fan remark, "What a lovely shade of cardinal" and repeated this on his column the next day. The nickname stuck and became official in 1900.

1899 was the only year that the team was called the "St. Louis Perfectos". After the St. Louis Browns were purchased by brothers Frank Robison and Stanley Robison, they changed the uniform color to red. They finished in fifth place that year for the National League. McHale died at the age of 23 on August 24, 1901 (Las Vegas, Nevada).
