Inscription.  Sedona’s earliest permanent settlers planted fruit trees as they arrived along Oak Creek. Apples and peaches seemed to grow well along with apricots and plums. Grapevines didn’t take as long to mature as fruit trees so the Schuerman’s planted grapes for making wine, along with their orchard. They found a ready market for their wine in the mining community of Jermone.

Frank Pendley planted his orchard in 1912 eventually having 700 trees. The Jordan began planting about 1930 eventually having 1500 trees. Soon there was a thriving commercial fruit industry all along Oak Creek.

George Jordan collected the fruit of small producers and helped market it. Both the Pendleys and the Jordans opened stores along the highway to sell their produce to passersby. The commercial orchards were all gone by the early 1970s.
