Inscription. The Liriodendron mansion was built in 1898 as a summer home away from the heat of the Kellys’ Mount Vernon home. The mansion was named after the tulip poplar trees that shade the 200-acre grounds. The Kelly family lived in the mansion until the 1980s. The property was sold to Harford County and the Liriodendron Foundation was formed to manage the park.
