Welcome to the Grand Etang Forest Reserve
The Grand Etang Forest Reserve was established in 1906 and covers an area of 3,816 acres (1,600 hectares). Within the reserve lies the source of the largest river on the island, the Great River which drains into the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern side of the island. Grand Etang caters to outdoor enthusiasts offering over 35 km of designated recreational trails, educational opportunities and bird watching.

The famous Grand Etang Crater Lake is a key feature of this area and was formed by volcanic activity that took place some 15,000 – 25,000 years ago. The lake is 1,740 feet above sea level and measures 36 acres. Water is extracted from the lake during the dry season to supplement the supply to St. George.

Historical features of Grand Etang
At Grand Etang you can see the historical Fedon campsite which was used during the famous Fedon rebellion, the first on the island against colonial masters during slavery. The lake area has been used for spiritual worship for centuries, and this continues even today. The Central Building was used for official ceremonial activities
