1. Old Red Fox Marker
Inscription. At Valley Forge, Dan Ellis usually assembled for Federal regiments whom he guided over obscure mountain trails to Kentucky, while East Tennessee was under Confederate control. Born 1827 and a veteran of the Mexican War, he was subsequently Captain of Co. "A,” 13th Tennessee Cavalry, USA. He died in 1907 and is buried in the family cemetery 14th District.

Also see . . .  Captain Daniel Ellis. Ellis became a pilot, leading Unionists, Confederate deserters, prison escapees, slaves, and all manner of fugitives through the mountains into Kentucky or wherever the Union lines would advance. All the while he recruited for several regiments, provided information on Confederate activities to Federal authorities, and maintained a mail service between mountain Unionists and their men in the Union army. Possibly the most successful of all such pilots, and despite a bounty on his head, Ellis always (often narrowly) escaped capture, and became known as "The Old Red Fox."
