Gairdín cuimhneachain / Garden of Remembrance

D'úsáid siad an chloch ollmhór ar chúis anphraiticiúil: chun cabhrú lena dtithe a théamh. Bhí Mathew Colfer ar dhuine de na daoine a cheaptar a thug faoi seo. They used the huge stones for a very practical reason: to help warm their homes. One who may have done was Mathew Colfer. In 1911, Mathew was a 50 year old farm labourer who would have hitched a horse to the stone then poured 'culm' (waste anthracite), yellow clay and water in the circular groove beneath. Walking the horse around, the stone crushed everything into a sticky paste. This was moulded into egg-shaped lumps that could be burned and glowed intensely after drying.

• Stones from demolished buildings helped raise the garden above the river's flood level.
• The Great War memorial records nearly 500 Carlow casualties ranging from Sydney George aged 17 to William Byrne aged 53.
• Nurse Margaret Kehoe of Leighlinbridge[,] who was shot at the South Dublin Union during Easter Week 1916, is also remembered here.
