1. Peru’s First Settler Marker

Inscription. William Hay, a Scotsman, was Peru's first settler. He built his house in this vicinity in 1772. Hay had a friendly relationship with Benedict Arnold and witnessed the "Battle of Valcour.” The town's first marriage was between Hay's daughter, Maby, and Lott Elmore.

Erected 2017 by Town of Peru.

2. Peru’s First Settler Marker

The marker is at the entrance to a state boat launch for Lake Champlain. This is a particularly nice one with a view of a lighthouse, Revolutionary War battle site, and of course, the lake itself and always a nice breeze.
