Inscription. By the mid-1800s, Pawlet had 10 one-room schoolhouses. The Braintree School was built in 1852 replacing a prior wooden structure that had burned. It is located in a small settlement known as Braintree, which was named for New Braintree, Massachusetts, where its original settlers came from. The school served 8 grades for 87 years with 9 to 14 students each year.

This is a one-story, gable-front Federal Style school with double wythe "rose" brick walls laid in five course American Bond. There is a gable front woodshed and two bay outhouse in the rear of the property.

In 1930 Braintree received "improvements” funded by the town and state. This probably included the bank of four windows on the school's west side and the addition of the side door. The school retains the original wide board blackboards that we’re typical of early period schoolhouses. Heat was provided by an Ajax wood stove, which is still in the school today.

This property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, May 3, 2010.
