English:
Born in England, Douglas was Lieutenant-Governor and Commander in Chief of New Brunswick (1823-1831). He encouraged agriculture and fostered pioneer work in steam navigation and lighthouse construction. In 1828 he founded King’s College, now the University of New Brunswick. He dealt decisively with armed incursions from Maine and boldly upheld the rights of the Province in the boundary dispute (1826-28) with that state. Elected to both the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society, he was the author of significant books on military and political topics. He died at Tunbridge Wells, England.

Né en Angleterre, Douglas fut lieutenant-gouverneur et commandant en chef du Nouveau-Brunswick (1823-1831). Il encourage l'agriculture et favorisa les débuts de la navigation à vapeur et de la construction de phares. En 1828, il fonda le King's College, devenu depuis l'Université du Nouveau-Brunswick. Il s'occupa résolument du problème de l’infiltration américaine et défendit les droits du Nouveau-Brunswick dans ses conflits frontaliers avec le Maine (1826-1828). Auteur

Marker can be reached from St. John Street south of Queen Street (New Brunswick Route 102), on the left when traveling south. Marker is mounted on the east-facing side of a four-sided monument located on the west side of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly grounds, near the northwest corner of the Assembly building. As would be expected of an author and fellow of the Royal Society, his major achievement was in the improvement of King's College (University of New Brunswick), of which he was chancellor.
