Taistealaithe oíche

Tá sé seo an cheann de na háiteanna is fearr ar Domhan le bheith ag féachaint ar réaltaí na spéiew an oíche.

Is é[?]an Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve an chéad cheantar sa leathsféar thuaidh ar ar bronnadh gradam airgid air i ngeall ar chaighdeán na spéartha istoíche.

Ó tharla nach bhfuil tionchar ag truailliú solaris ar an gceantar, ar oíche gheal, rédhorcha, is féidir breis is 4000 réalta a fheiceáil leis an tsúil lom.

Noda do lucht faie réaltaí
Is ionann iad seacht réalta geala an Chéachta agus eireaball Ursa Major. Is ionann iad agus bealach chun Polaris a aimsiú, díreach os cionn phointe thuaisceart na léaslíne. Thóg sé 434 solasbhliain ar an solas ó Polaris, solas a bhfuil mairnéalaigh á threorú aige ar feadh na mblianta, teacht chomh fada leatsa.

Sa bhliain 1653 ghabh agus dícheannaigh trúpaí de chuid na Breataine an tAthair Proinsias Rua Ó Súilleabháin, scoláire, reibiliúnach, sagart agus fear a rabhthas sa tóir air.

Night voyages

This is one of the best places on the Planet to view starry skies at night.

The Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve is the first area in the northern hemisphere to receive a gold tier award for the quality of its night-time skies.

Given the lack of light pollution, on a clear, moonless night you can see over 4000 stars with the naked eye.

Tips for star gazers
The seven bright stars of the Plough form the tail of Ursa Major. They act as a guide towards Polaris, fixed above the north point of the horizon. The light from Polaris, which has guided seafarers for centuries, has taken 434 light-years to reach you.

Scariff Island, is where Fr Francis O'Sullivan, a scholar, rebel, priest and wanted man, was caught and beheaded by British troops in 1653.
