1. Jackson Fork Marker

Inscription. Once the hay was collected from the fields it has to be stored, either in a hay stack or barn. This was accomplished using a device known as a Jackson Fork. Used in combination with a complex set of lines and pulleys, the hay was lifted into the hayloft of a barn or into a hay stack. If stacked outside, the Jackson Fork was used in combination with a derrick. The Jackson Fork displayed above came from the Cherry Creek Ranch were it was apparently used to lift hay into a hay stack.

More about this marker. This marker is located at Kirkwood Historic Ranch in Hells Canyon Recreation Area. There appears to be road access to the ranch, but you will need Forest Service maps to use them. The best access is by a scenic river cruise.
