1. Historic Site in Journalism Marker
Inscription. The Chillicothe Gazette, published since 1800, is the oldest newspaper west of the Allegheny Mountains and the oldest business establishment in Ohio. The newspaper played an important part in American history, specifically through its part in opening the Northwest Territory, a step that led to American expansion to the Pacific.
 
Erected 1972 by Sigma Delta Chi, Professional Journalism Society.
