This regiment rendered important service as rear guard in
the movements and actions of the Eleventh and Twelfth Corps
in opening and maintaining communications with
the Army of the Cumberland at Chattanooga
from Nashville via Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad and
the Tennessee River.
Organized August 1861. Discharged July 1865.

 
Erected 1897 by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. (Marker Number MT-326.)
 
Marker series. This marker is included in the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Orchard Knob Reservation marker series.
 
Location. 35° 2.426′ N, 85° 16.427′ W. Marker is in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in Hamilton County. Marker is at the intersection of East 4th Street and North Hawthorne Street, on the right when traveling east on East 4th Street. Touch for map. The statue is on Orchard Knob, and can be viewed from the corner of East 4th and North Hawthorne Streets. Marker is in this post office area: Chattanooga TN 37404, United States of America.

According to the description information provided by the National Park Service, the marker is, "5'6" x 4'6" x 12' overall, the monument consists of two-part rock-faced base and a smooth-finished pedestal with bronze inscription tablets that support the bronze standing figure of a soldier holding his rifle at parade rest.“
