1. Maury’s School Marker

Inscription. Just north was a classical school conducted by the Rev. James Maury, rector of Fredericksville Parish from 1754 to 1769. Thomas Jefferson was one of Maury’s students. Matthew Fontaine Maury, the “Pathfinder of the Seas,” was Maury’s grandson.

Located on the grounds of the modern Edgeworth estate. The Historic Homes of the South-west Mountains Virginia (1898) indicated "The old log school-house in which he taught stood in one corner of the Edgeworth yard, the site of which is now marked by a hedge of cedars."
