Dedicated To The Memory Of The Heroic Men Of Bridgeport, Who Fell In The Late War For The Preservation Of The Union. July, 1876

"It is for us the living to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion in that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth."

7. Lady Liberty, Bridgeport Soldiers and Sailors Memorial
In September 2010, a fiberglass replica replaced the original, and sadly vandalized beyond repair, Lady Liberty. The replica was recreated based upon historic photographs, post cards and newspaper clippings.

Erected 1876.
 
Location. 41° 9.691′ N, 73° 11.174′ W. Marker is in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in Fairfield County. Marker can be reached from Waldemere Avenue near Park Avenue, on the left when traveling west. 8. Bridgeport Soldiers and Sailors Memorial
open space, now empty, once housed a white marble female representation of Liberty. It was removed because of deterioration of the stone.
The plaques are replacements for the originals, which were removed when the Connecticut Historical Society examined the monument as part of its survey of the state’s Civil War Monuments. The plaques are cast aluminum. Many of the decorative elements on the lower sections of the monuments base are fiberglass replacements.
 
Additional comments.

The original Lady Liberty was not removed as stated - it was vandalized and broken - a fiberglass replica will be installed on Sept 18, 2010 - recreated based upon historic photographs, post cards and newspaper clippings

Several of the bas reliefs were stolen in the 1990's for thier bronze scrap metal value - originals that were not stolen are retained by the Barnum Museum.

Please update your photos once the replacement statue is installed - the monument will then be as close to original as possible

Restoration was accomplished by the Friends of Seaside Park.
