Inscription.
In 1891, G.W. Goethals, in his role as supervisor of public works on the Tennessee River, reported directly to the Secretary of War. Later, he was Chief Engineer for the construction of the Panama Canal.
 
Erected 2007 by City of Florence.
 
Location. 34° 48.395′ N, 87° 37.884′ W. Marker is in Florence, Alabama, in Lauderdale County. Marker can be reached from Hightower Place south of Veterans Drive (Alabama Route 133), on the left when traveling south. Touch for map. Located in River Heritage Park. 2. Walk of Honor River Heritage Park
Goethals (pronounced gō-thülz; June 29, 1858 – January 21, 1928) was a United States Army officer and civil engineer, best known for his supervision of construction and the opening of the Panama Canal. The Goethals Bridge between Staten Island, New York City and Elizabeth, New Jersey is named in his honor, as is the Goethals Medal. (Submitted on March 21, 2010, by Sandra Hughes of Killen, Usa.)

3. Wilson Dam. Wilson Dam is a dam spanning the Tennessee River between Lauderdale County and Colbert County in the U.S. state of Alabama. It impounds Wilson Lake. It is one of nine Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) dams on the Tennessee River. The dam was declared a National Historic Landmark on November 13th, 1966.
