Inscription. Official residence, N.C. governors, it was completed 1891 on Burke Square using prison labor. Architects, A.G. Bauer & Samuel Sloan.

Designed by Samuel Sloan and Gustavus Adolphus Bauer of Philadelphia. Constructed 1883 – 1891 by prison labor and directed by W. J. Hicks, warden. Exterior: Brick pressed at central prison in Raleigh; Anson County sandstone trim. Interior: North Carolina hardwoods. Plaque Dedicated, 1971, in tribute to governors and First ladies who served their state from this mansion.
