1. Hanging Rock Marker
Inscription. On June 31, 1864 General Hunter, retreating from defeat at Lynchburg by General Early, met Confederate forces led by General John McCausland. After losing some of his artillery here, Hunter continued his withdrawal northwest through New Castle to Lewisburg.

Location. 37° 19.497′ N, 80° 2.073′ W. Marker is near Hanging Rock, Virginia, in Roanoke County. Marker is on North Electric Road (Virginia Route 419) near U.S. 81, on the left when traveling west. Touch for map. Marker is immediately off the I-81 Southbound exit ramp onto Electric Road East. Marker is in this post office area: Roanoke VA 24019, United States of America.
