Inscription. Originally the Bicknell Block, stagecoach, mail, express and telegraph center in mining days.
Companies which became Pacific Gas & Electric formed here.
Site of the first whipping post in state.
Façade unchanged since 1854.
 
Erected 1968 by Wm. Bull Meek - Wm. Morris Stewart Chapter No. 10, E Clampus Vitus. (Marker Number 899.)

HISTORIC NATIONAL HOTEL
In the early "sixties" it was the headquarters for stage lines to the Boom Camps far and near and "was only 18 hours" by stage to far away Virginia City. NEVADA CITY California "on the historic Mother Lode"
