Inscription.
Born in Virginia. State Treasurer 1819-23. Trustee of Vandalia appointed by Legislature 1821. House of Representatives 1826-28. Senate 1828-32 and 1836-38. State Bank Commissioner 1835-37. Registrar of U.S. Land Office. Isabella, niece of Shadrach Bond, first governor of Illinois. Governor resided in their home during legislative sessions.
 
Erected 1974 by Vandalia Historical Society, in memory of Joseph C. Burtschi.
