Inscription. Secretary of Agriculture and later of the Treasury under Wilson. College president and author. His birthplace stood 60 yards north.
 
Erected 1954 by North Carolina Archives Conservation and Highway Departments. (Marker Number L-54.)
 
Location. 34° 59.005′ N, 80° 33.067′ W. Marker is in Monroe, North Carolina, in Union County. Marker is at the intersection of West Jefferson Street and North Stewart Street, on the right when traveling west on West Jefferson Street. Touch for map.
