Peter Doremus opened a general merchandise store on this site in 1812. His son, Philip, constructed the present building, adapting his business to a suburban clientele. Town offices were once located on the upper floors. Hampton House Furniture, founded in 1947 by Carl E. Fisch now occupies the entire building.
