Inscription. This building served as Fire Station #5 at 17th and Broadway, from 1910 until 1973, when it was replaced with a modern two-bay structure. In 1910 the city had nine pieces of horse-drawn fire-fighting equipment, including the ladder-hose wagon and the steam pumper shown here. Paducah had organized a volunteer fire company in 1840. Paid fire fighters assumed duty in 1882. The first motorized fire truck, and American LaFrance, was put into service in 1913, and is now on display in the William Clark Market House Museum.
