Inscription. Welcome to the City of Greenbelt
Unlike most towns that develop gradually over a long period of time, Greenbelt was the first "green town" built in 1936 from scratch as part of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. The entire community was completely mapped on paper before any construction work ever began. Although many more green towns were ever planned, only two others were ever built.
Greenbelt is a unique and special community with many wonderful sights to see. A detailed walking tour brochure is available at the Municipal Building. Wayside panels at many of the sites provide interesting and educational information.
Enjoy our parks, playgrounds and green spaces. Walk freely on our many pathways. We welcome you to our community and hope to see you again.
