Year-round at Calf Pasture, you’ll see people reaping the bounty that Long Island Sound provides. You can participate too, but be sure to first obtain the required permits and then obey all applicable requirements and restrictions. These measures are in place to help ensure safe and undepleted harvests.

Fishing
For folks without boats, the Calf Pasture pier (and, at low tide, the park’s sand bars) are among the most popular fishing spots in the city. Anglers cast for striped bass, bluefish and other tasty game fish. No license is required for salt-water fishing but there are minimum-size restrictions for “keepers.”

Clamming
All you really need, besides a license from the city, is a clam rake, measuring ring and something to put the legal-sized clams in. Some clammers will slurp ‘em down on the spot; others cut the meat up at home for chowder. Remember: there is a daily legal limit.

Duck hunting
Mallards and other legal waterfowl can be hunted on the water while “in season.” (Get dates, and where to buy a permit from the state DEP).

Oystering & Lobstering
In all seasons, in all weather, you’re likely to see oyster boats or lobstermen working the Sound. Both are important industries sensitive to the Sound’s well-being. The tall thin stakes you see out in the water marks
