1. Eastern New Mexico University Marker
Inscription. This university was established at Portales in 1927 by the State Legislature as the Eastern New Mexico Normal School. It opened for the 1934-35 School year with 274 students. Originally established to train teachers for rural schools, Eastern now has a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs to serve the instructional, public service and research needs of the state and the nation.
 
Erected by New Mexico Historic Preservation Division.
 
Location. 34° 10.78′ N, 103° 20.986′ W. Marker is in Portales, New Mexico, in Roosevelt County. Marker is on U.S. 70 0.1 miles west of North Avenue K, on the right when traveling west. Touch for map. Marker is in this post office area: Portales NM 88130, United States of America.
