1. Ingham University Marker
Inscription. On this campus Marietta and Emily Ingham of Saybrook, Connecticut, founded Le Roy Female Seminary, which became, by charter on April 28, 1857, the first university for women in the United States, granting degrees in the humanities, fine arts and music. The presence of this university, offering superior education for girls from primary through graduate school, notably raised the cultural environment of this country village. The spirit of Ingham, through the pervasive influence of the teachers it sent forth throughout the land, still presents a challenge to each new generation.
