1. Ingham University Marker
Inscription. On this campus Marietta and Emily Ingham of Saybrook, Connecticut, founded Le Roy Female Seminary, which became, by charter on April 28, 1857, the first university for women in the United States, granting degrees in the humanities, fine arts and music. The presence of this university, offering superior education for girls from primary through graduate school, notably raised the cultural environment of this country village. The spirit of Ingham, through the pervasive influence of the teachers it sent forth throughout the land, still presents a challenge to each new generation.

Location. 42° 58.593′ N, 77° 59.235′ W. Marker is in LeRoy, New York, in Genesee County. Marker is on Wolcott Street 0.1 miles south of E. Main Street, on the right when traveling north. Touch for map. Marker is in this post office area: Le Roy NY 14482, United States of America.

This marker is in front of LeRoy's Woodward Memorial Library, which a separate marker on the same property indicates was built of the razed material of the Arts Conservatory. About 15 feet to the right of this marker is a bust of one of the Arts Directors of Ingham University
