Inscription. Nine persons were massacred about 100 yards east of here by a band of Indians attached to Burgoyne's army July 25,1777. The Cairn marks their burial place.

After one of their war party had been killed during a fight in nearby Salem New York, the Indians massacred the Allen family in revenge. This massacre as well as the murder of Jane McCrea helped galvanize support for the Patriot cause against Burgoyne's incursion.
